Community Bookstores, Crayons, and Geocaching: Two Cents with's Jennifer Ford

Every week, we invite interesting people from all walks of life to share their "Two Cents," a quick question-and-answer format we think you'll enjoy!

This week's Two Cents comes from Jennifer Ford, a writer for, an excellent parenting resource for Austin-area moms. is dedicated to building a better village. Jennifer's Two Cents:
What would you consider to be an underrated park?
Northeast Metro Park in Pflugerville, hands down. It's always deserted, but it's such a great park. It's huge and there are three separate playground areas spread out across the acreage. There is also a really great trail that goes through a woodsy area. My sons and I have spent hours there playing and hiking and looking for Geocaches.
An overrated park?
I can't really think of a park that I don't like or that doesn't live up to the hype. I'm usually just happy to be outdoors! My husband says Pfluger Park here in Pflugerville is boring, but I adore it.
What's a local business that could use some love?
Beth's Book Box in Pflugerville. It's the best used bookstore I've ever found. Beth, the owner, is great, and she is always planning fun events at her store for kids and adults alike. She's got story time for the kids on Thursdays at noon, and a very respectable Lego collection for kids to play with while mom and dad do some browsing. Beth also has local artists' work for sale, which is one of my favorite things about going to her store. You never know what she will have. Beth's Book Box is truly a community bookstore, and you should definitely check it out!
What would you consider an underrated online parenting resource? is such a wonderfully supportive site! I hadn't heard about until a dear friend raved about it. It's more than just baby names-there are forums on the site to discuss just about any parenting issue in which you might be interested. When David and I were trying to have another baby, I constantly turned to the forums there for information, advice and support. I hear it's also a great place to, you know, discuss baby names. :)

What's your favorite "rainy day" (indoor) activity with the kids?
I have fabric markers reserved for days when it's too ugly outside even to ride our bikes in the rain. We pick up a couple of (inexpensive- no one is drawing on something from Gymboree!) shirts from Target or Wal-Mart, and the kids go to town, drawing whatever they want on their shirts. The boys love to wear their shirts, and the fabric markers we have (Crayola brand) are surprisingly color-fast, so they still look great.
Share an underrated blog on website...
Hmm. I'm going to go with Free Fun in Austin: Excellent site for free deals and free activities in Austin. I'd be broke without this site!
